At one point we all wondered how far technology would advance, maybe some of us said we would wear it on our face. Now, with Meta and Ray-Ban’s collaboration on the new Meta glasses, that idea is a reality. According to Meta, the glasses are supposed to help you live in the moment. Prices for these glasses vary but it can range from $200 to $400. The glasses come with a camera that can record and take pictures, and is supposed to have a blue light indicating when it’s recording, built-in speakers can play music by connecting the glasses to your phone, and lastly an A.I tool which Zuckerberg uploaded a demonstration of to his Instagram. The biggest concern raised about these glasses is the camera. According to Brian Chen from the New York Times, when he wore the glasses for an entire two weeks, he was able to get away with recording people despite there being a blue light that is supposed to let people know when you’re recording.

This is a big privacy and security risk, especially since the one thing that lets people know that you’re recording isn’t sufficient. Not only that, but here in California if you’re in a public setting, generally it is okay to record people in public. If Meta is thinking of making a new version of the glasses then they could improve upon the camera and provide a way to give people a better alert so they can keep themselves safe. One possible area Meta could take notes from is when Japan had a problem with people taking pictures underneath peoples skirts, and how Japanese phones now have a mandatory shutter sound when the camera goes off. Meta could make the blue light brighter or add some kind of noise that lets people know when someone is recording. If these are the innovations of today, imagine what the future holds.
