Since the start of November, two major fast food companies have been boycotted. The companies in question are Starbucks and McDonalds. Things started on the social media platform X, when Starbucks sued the Starbucks Workers Union for a tweet they made in solidarity with Palestine. While McDonalds sent free food to the Israeli troops that are causing damage to Gaza. As a result of this people have taken upon themselves to take action against these companies. On popular social media platforms TikTok and X, two hashtags have been going around called #BoycottMcDonald’s and #BoycottStarbucks. Both of these hashtags have millions of views on TikTok. As for X, most posts generate around 1,000 to 2,000 likes, and roughly 10,000 views.

Due to the boycotts Starbucks has lost 9.4% of its sales; that's approximately $11 billion in sales. Starbucks also ran a failed Christmas campaign they set up hoping that sales would go up, but things have only been going downhill. Because of this, more ads of companies are appearing on websites and social media with increased frequency. So far, it’s only sales at Starbucks that we know have gone down, as for Mcdonalds, we haven’t seen much change in the U.S. But in Egypt sales have gone down by 70% . We have also seen one protest that happened at a Mcdonald’s in Orem, a city in Utah on November 24, 2023. But that is the only one that we have seen in the media. We don’t know how long these boycotts will last, but there’s a chance they’ll last for a while seeing as so many people are on board with this boycott. It’s all up to the audience to decide if they're in or not.
