Most people have heard of a sugar rush. You eat four too many cookies or drink a bit too much soda, and suddenly you’re bouncing off the walls. Studies have shown that there is no backing to the theory. The idea was introduced in the 1970’s after a misconducted study.

Researchers have found that the dye, Red 40 or Allura Red AC Lake may cause a similar reaction. This is not the only side effect. Red 40 can cause migraines and is linked to cancer. The FDA banned it for cosmetic use but it remains in our food. The majority of mainstream snacks such as chips, candy, soda, and baked goods contain food colorings, of which Red 40 is one of the most prolific.

A study published by PubMed Central conducted in 2023 found that Red 40 can cause cancer and California has been pushing to ban its use in food. Red 40 also causes behavioral changes in subjects with ADHD. Significant improvements in behavior were observed with the removal of Red 40 from subjects’ diets.

Red 40 is a synthetic dye that is made from ingredients in petroleum, or crude oil, so the side effects should be no surprise. Those looking to substitute Red 40 can find potent alternatives in beet juice or powder, cranberries, cherries, pomegranate, dried hibiscus, and beta-carotene.
